CALENDAR LAKE PROJECT

The Calendar Lake Project was a unique expedition that saw us circumnavigating Lake Malawi, known as the Calendar Lake due to its dimensions – 365 miles long, 52 miles wide, with 12 major rivers flowing into it. I had the privilege of directing, filming, and actively participating in this expedition, capturing the lake's beauty, the vibrant communities around it, and the stories that define this region.

The project was born from an offhand comment by Guy Pickering, who mentioned to his wife that he wanted to go around the lake. Her response, "You're mad! No one has ever done that," set the wheels in motion for this historic voyage.

With a crew of six, we embarked on a journey to explore the lake's biodiversity, culture, and tourism potential. Our expedition was supported by sponsors like Kumbali, TNM, Pact, Kaya Mawa by Green Safaris, Blue Zebra Island Lodge, and the Responsible Safari Company.

LAKE OF STARS

Along the way, we visited various lodges that showcased the region's warm hospitality. We covered local soccer matches sponsored by the telecom company TNM and promoted the lodges we stayed at, capturing the essence of each place and the unique experiences they offered.

We had the privilege of engaging with influential figures such as Paramount Chief "King" Kyungu and former vice president Justin Malewezi. Their insights into the region's history and culture were invaluable in shaping the narrative of our journey.

Our expedition covered topics ranging from the local fishing community to museums detailing prehistoric life, early humans, the slave trade, explorer David Livingston, and local traditions like the Zulu Wamkulu and the Mua Mission.

The journey came full circle as we made our way back to Kumbali Lake Retreat under a starry sky reminiscent of the Lake of Stars. The twinkling lights of the fishermen mirrored the stars above, creating a surreal atmosphere that captured the essence of our journey.

The Calendar Lake Project was a deep dive into the heart of a region steeped in history, culture, and natural beauty. It left us with a profound appreciation for the stories embedded in the waters of Lake Malawi and the lives of the people who call it home.
